Stern and Mouly Honored

Françoise Mouly and Alan Stern will be among those honored with the American Ingenuity Award by the Smithsonian on November 12. The American Ingenuity Awards are selected by a poll of Smithsonian directors to find innovators making a difference in their fields. Mouly is being honored for her work on comics such as Raw, while Stern is being recognized as the leader of the New Horizons mission to Pluto.

New Science Fiction Station Launching

Sinclair Broadcast Group has announced that it will launch Comet, a television station devoted to science fiction, on October 31. The station is expected to reach 60% of the country upon launch, including the cities of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Denver, St. Louis, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Boston, Pittsburgh, and Houston. Initial programming will include Stargate SG-1 (and spin-offs), The Outer Limits, and various science fiction films. Sinclair is partnering with MGM in the venture.

Wolfe Named Series Editor

Gary K. Wolfe has been named the series Editor for the Modern Masters of Science Fiction series published by University of Illinois Press, with Marika Christofides serving as acquisitions editor. The series presents book length surveys of individual authors, including Frederik Pohl, Lois McMaster Bujold, Connie Willis, and Gregory Benford, among others.

Obituary: George Mueller

NASA Administrator George Mueller (b.1918) died on October 12. Mueller helped create the test process for the Apollo program, helped design Skylab, and advocated for the space shuttle program. Following his work at NASA, Mueller worked for a variety of aerospace contractors.

Obituary: Liviu Radu

Romanian author Liviu Radu (b.1948) died on October 17. Radu began publishing fiction in 1993 with the story “Faţa nevăzută a planetei Marte.” In addition to his own fiction, Radu translated the works of numerous Anglophonic authors into Romanian. He also founded the Ion Hobana National Colloquium. Over the years, Radu won the the Vladimir Colin Grand Prix, the Imagination Seniors Award, the Ion Hobana Award, and the 2010 Eurocon Encouragement Award.

Obituary: Bruce Hyde

Actor Bruce Hyde (b.1941) died on October 13. Hyde, who taught at St. Cloud State University, appeared in two episodes of Star Trek in 1966 as Kevin Riley. The majority of Hyde’s screen credits date to 1965 and 1966.

Roswell Award Deadline

The Los Angeles Science Fiction One-Act Play Festival has announced the deadline for the 2016 Roswell Award, for original works of short science fiction no longer than 1500 words. Five finalists will have their works read aloud during the Festival and the winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000. The deadline for submissions is January 15th, 2016.

Rockhead Games has announced a partnership with Christopher Kastensmidt’s company Consultacad to develop transmedia content for Starlit Adventures. Already popular in Latin America and China, Starlit Adventures will launch worldwide on November 19.

Harper Open Submission Period

Harper Voyager is holding an open submission period for science fiction and fantasy from November 2-6 with a special emphasis on Urban Fantasy and Military Science Fiction. Completed manuscripts between 60,000 and 90,000 words may be submitted during those dates.

Loscon 42 Writing Contest

Loscon 42, which will be held from November 27-29, will be holding a writing contest for aspiring authors. Writers can enter stories in three categories: Youth (6-12), Young adult (13-20), or Adult (21 plus). Stories may be fantasy or science fiction between 500 and 1,000 words. Youth can supplement their stories with pictures (each picture counting as 50 words towards the word count). Submissions are due by October 31 and should be sent to
