Worldcon 75 Adds Hugo Category

Worldcon 75, to be held in Helsinki in 2017, has announced that they will present a Hugo for Best Series. Each Worldcon may create a one-time Hugo category and Worldcon 75 has elected to trial a Best Series Hugo prior to the category getting its second ratification vote. The Best Series Hugo may be given to “a multi-volume science fiction or fantasy story, unified by elements such as plot, characters, setting, and presentation, which has appeared in at least three volumes consisting of a total of at least 240,000 words by the close of the calendar year 2016, at least one volume of which was published in 2016.”

Obituary: Lucy Stern

Los Angeles fan Lucy Stern died on September 28. Stern is a longtime member of LASFS and has also be an attendee and staffer at Loscons, Baycons, Gallifrey, Westercons, and various Worldcons.

Moreno-Garcia Joins The Dark

Silvia Moreno-Garcia has been hired to serve as co-editor of The Dark Magazine, alongside current editor and publisher Sean Wallace. Moreno-Garcia will assume responsibility on October 1 and her first issue with be the January issue.

Obituary: Robert Weinberg

Author Robert Weinberg (b.1946) died on September 25. Weinberg began publishing fiction in 1967 and from 1970 to 1981 edited the fanzine Pulp about pulp magazines. He wrote for Marvel Comics and was known for his art collection. Weinberg also ran a mail order book business until 1997. In 2012, Weinberg received a special committee award at Chicon 7, that year’s Worldcon.

Terry Jones Suffering from Aphasia

Former Monty Python member Terry Jones, who also co-directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail and directed Monty Python’s Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life, has been diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia. Because the disease impacts his ability to communicate, Jones is no longer giving interviews and may eventually lead to complete inability to speak. In addition to his work with Monty Python, Jones has written several documentaries and books on history as well as the novelization of Douglas Adams’s video game Starship Titanic.

Obituary: Terence Bayler

Actor Terence Bayler (b.1930) died on August 2. Bayler portrayed the Bloody Baron’s Ghost in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. He also has roles in the Terry Gilliam films Time Bandits and Brazil. In Life of Brian, he declared that unlike everyone else, he was not an individual and during the crucifixion scene declared that he was Brian, as was his wife. Bayler also appeared on Doctor Who in the first Doctor serial “The Return” and the second Doctor serial “The War Games”
