ICG Lifetime Achievement Awards

The International Costumers’ Guild announced the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients at Costume-Con 35 is Mississauga, Ontario on April 22. Eric Cannon and Sue Kulinyi were honored for their work in filming masquerades and providing DVDs of the events for participants as well as archiving records of past masquerades.

Keith R.A. DeCandido married Wrenn Simms on April 22 in New York, with Glenn Haumann serving as the officiant.

Hugo Ballot Change

Worldcon 75 has announced that Alex Gamer has indicated that he is ineligible for his nomination for Best Fan Artist. Gamer’s entire 2016 publication was professional with no fan art published during that period. Worldcon 75 has replaced him on the ballot with Steve Stiles. New printed ballots are being produced and the on-line ballot will reflect the change when it goes live.

Filk Hall of Fame Inductees

Three new members were added to the Filk Hall of Fame at FilkOntario. The Filk Hall of Fame honors performers and organizers. It was founded in 1995. Nominees are suggested by members of fandom and the winners are selected by a panel of judges from a variety of filk conventions.

Obituary: Waldemar Kumming

German fan Waldemar Kumming (b.1924) died on April 5. Kumming was the editor of the Munich Roundup, a fanzine focused on European fandom. In 1984, he received the European SF Award for services to fandom. He won the Big Heart Award at Interaction in 2005. Some of his writing appearing in Vector, Heyne Science Fiction Magazin, and Das Science Fiction Jahr Ausgabe.

GUFF Winner

Australian fan Donna Maree Hanson was named the GUFF winner in a field that included Sam Hawke, Belle McQuattie, and Alexandra Pierce. Originally, Alisa Krasnostein was running with Pierce, but she dropped out after the race began. Hanson won in the fourth round of vote tabulation and will travel to Helsinki for Worldcon 75, to be held August 9-13, 2017.

Odyssey Con Books Replacements Guests

With all three original Guests of Honor cancelling their appearances at Odyssey Con, the convention has announced a new slate of guests just over a week before the convention is scheduled to take place in Madison, Wisconsin. Michael Butts will appear as a Media Guest and Brent Chumley will appear as an Artist Guest.

Anathema, an on-line magazine spotlighting science fiction by queer people of color, has published its first issue. The magazine aims to publish three times a year. The first issue contains stories by S. Qiouyi Lu, Tony Pi, Ayodele Olofintuade, Brent Lambert, and Stephanie Chan.
