Year’s Best Military and Adventure SF Award

Sharon Lee and Steve Miller have won the third Year’s Best Military and Adventure SF Award for their story “Wise Child,” presented by Baen Books and based on readers’ votes on the contents of The Year’s Best Military and Adventure SF, edited by David Afsharirad. The winners were announced at the Baen Traveling Road Show held at Dragon Con. Lee and Miller will receive a plaque and a $500 prize.

Design a Creature: Dark Crystal

Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is giving artists a chance to design an original creature for the world of The Dark Crystal, to be featured in the upcoming Netflix Original series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Concepts, created by hand or digitally, shoudl include front and side views, along with 50-100 words about the creature, including name, backstory and characteristics. The winner will receive $500 and the concept will be turned into a creature for possible inclusion in the show. Submissions are due by November 22.

Lezli Robyn Eye Surgery

Author Lezli Robyn, who also works as co-publisher for Arc Manor, is suffering from Keratoconus, a rare progressive eye disease. She is condidered legally blind without correction and sees multiple images. Arc Manor publisher Shahid Mahmud is running a GoFundMe campaign to help raise money o cover corrective surgery for Robyn.

SFWA Grants Available

SFWA has issued a call for grant requests. They are looking for non=profit project that support SFWA’s mission to promote and support fantasy and science fiction writing and writers. Applicants should include the Recipient’s tax status, information about the project or work proposed, how the project promotes science fiction and fantasy, the intended audience for the project, and how the grant will be managed.

Galactic Philadelphia Debuts

A new reading series, Galactic Philadelphia, will debut on October 24 at 7:30 at the Irish Pub at 2007 Walnut Street. The kick off readers will be Gardner Dozois and Lara Elena Donnelly. The event asks for a $5 donation which will help fund SFWA projects.

DragonCon Injuries

Two women were injured when chairs were thrown from the upper stories of the Atlanta Marriott Marquis into the atrium during Dragon Con on September 3. Jamie Temple-Thompson Amador and Kelly McDaniel were both taken to the hospital and treated for their injuries. McDaniel, whose injuries required two staples, credits her Loki costume head dress for saving her life. Amador, who was attending her first Dragon Con, was dressed as Jessica Rabbit.

Eugie Foster Award

The winner of the Eugie Foster Award for short fiction was announced at Dragon Con on September 2. This year’s winner is N.K. Jemisin for her story “The City Born Great.” The award is presented in memory of Nebula winning author Eugie Foster.

Obituary: Shelley Berman

Actor and comedian Shelley Berman (b.1925) died on September 1. Berman is best known as a comedian, but he also appeared in episodes of The Twilight Zone, Bewitched, Pushing Daisies, Teen Witch, The Munsters Today, and Knight Rider.

Obituary: Richard Anderson

Actor Richard Anderson (b.1926) died on August 31. Anderson is best known for portraying Oscar Goldman on both The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. Prior to that role, he played Chief Quinn in the film Forbidden Planet. He also made appearances on Knight Rider, The Wild Wild West, The Green Hornet, and Land of the Giants.
