Science Fiction Exhibit in Greece

The exhibit “Science Fiction: A Journey into the Unknown,” which opened at London’s Barbican Centre in 2017, is currently at the Onassis Cultural Centre in Athens. The exhibit will remain open through January 14, 2018.

Obituary: Dominic Frontiere

Composer Dominic Frontiere (b.1931) died on December 21. Frontiere composed theme music for television shows The Flying Nun, The Invaders, and The Outer Limits.

Obituary: Tommy Silverros

Swedish fan Tommy Silverros (b.1961) died on November 24. Silverros was active in the MLSF (Malmö-Lund Science Fiction and Fantasy Association) and served as the organization’s Vice Chairman. Silverros was not only active in Swedish fandom, but also traveled throughout Europe enjoying conventions and promoting Swedish fandom.

Obituary: Alfie Curtis

Actor Alfie Curtis (b.1930) died on December 25. Curtis appeared in an episode of the proto-steampunk television series Q.E.D. and the film The Elephant Man. His most recognizable role, however, was as Cornelius Evazan, the drunk in Mos Eisely who threatens Luke, in Star Wars.

San Diego Wins Comic-Con Trademark Case

A jury gave a positive verdict to Comic-Con International in its three year old trademark lawsuit against the Salt Lake Comic Con. The lawsuit stems from 2014 when the Salt Lake convention drove a high end car labeled “Salt Lake Comic Con” around San Diego during the San Diego convention. Although Comic-Con International sued for $12 million in damages, they were only awarded $20,000.

Gar LaSalle Storyteller Award

E. Lily Yu has been announced as the winner of the 2017 Gar LaSalle Storyteller Award. The annual award recognizes outstanding work by an established or emerging author of fiction based in Washington State. The recipient receives a $10,000 grant to continue their work. Yu submitted her story “The View From the Top of the Stair” as a sample of her writing.

Worldcon 76 Funding for Chinese Fans

Storycon has set up the Shimmer Program to help fund the visit of Chinese fans to attend Worldcon 76 in San Jose. A Similar fund was successful for Worldcon 75 in Helsinki. Two active Chinese fans will be granted RMB10,000 to attend the convention.

Clarion Workshops Accepting Applications

The Clarion and Clarion West Writers Workshops are both accepting applications for their 2018 Summer Workshops. The Clarion Workshop runs from June 24 – August 4 and will feature Christopher Barzak, Holly Black, Mat Johnson, Kij Johnson, Kelly Link, and Gavin Grant. The Clarion West Workshop runs from June 17 – July 27 and will feature Daniel Abraham, Ken MacLeod, Yoon Ha Lee, Karen Lord, Karen Joy Fowler, and Ellen Datlow. The application deadline for both workshops is March 1.

Crider Enters Hospice

Author Bill Crider, best known for his crime fiction, has announced that he has entered hospice. Crider has been battling cancer for several years and notes that he most likely only has a few weeks left. Crider was the recipient of the Sidewise Award for 2015.
