Strandberg Suffers Stroke

Swedish fan Lars-Olov Strandberg, guest of honor at Interaction, the 2005 Worldcon, has suffered a stroke, according to his niece. Strandberg is paralyzed in half his body and incommunicable. Doctor are still hoping a partial recovery is possible.

Tevis in KY Writers Hall of Fame

Walter Tevis, who wrote the SF novels The Man Who Fell to Earth, Mockingbird, and The Steps of the Sun as well as several short stories, was inducted into the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame on January 31. In addition to his SF, Tevis also wrote the novel The Hustler, which became the basis for the Paul Newman film of the same name.

El-Mohtar Named NYTBR Reviewer

Amal El-Mohtar has been named the reviewer for the New York Times Book Review Otherworldy column, which looks at science fiction and fantasy. El-Mohtar replaces N.K. Jemisin, who started the column in 2016. El-Mohtar won the Nebula, Locus, and Hugo Award last year. Her columns will begin to appear in late February.

Sawyer Named to Order of Ontario

Canadian SF author Robert Sawyer will be one of 23 appointments into the Order of Ontario, the Canadian province’s highest honour. Sawyer, who is already a member of the Order of Canada, is the first person in the science fiction field to attain this honour. The Order of Ontario recognizes individuals whose exceptional achievement in their field have left a lasting legacy in the province, in Canada and beyond. Investiture will take place on February 27.

Obituary: Rob Ihinger

Minneapolis fan Rob Ihinger (b.1955) died on January 26. Ihinger was active in MinnSTF and worked in various departments for Minicon over the years, including work as a hotel liaison and operations. He was married to author Peg Kerr.

Obituary: Robert Dowdell

Actor Robert Dowdell (b.1932) died on January 23. Dowdell played Lt. Commander Chip Morton on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and appeared in episodes of V, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Land of the Giants, and Max Headroom.

Obituary: Jack Ketchum

Author Jack Ketchum (b.Dallas Mayr, 1946) died on January 24 from cancer. His novels include Joyride, The Lost, and The Girl Next Door. Ketchum received three Bram Stoker Awards and was named a Grand Master by World Horror Con.

The Screen Actors Awards were presented on January 21. Although no genre works won in the film or television categories, they swept the Stunt categories.

Obituary: Ursula K. Le Guin

Author Ursula K. Le Guin (b.1929) died on January 22. Le Guin is the author of the Earthsea cycle and has won the Nebula and Hugo Awards six times each and the World Fantasy Award twice, among many others. She was Guest of Honor at the 1975 Worldcon, Aussiecon 1, and was named a SFWA Grand Master in 2003. Her novels included The Left Hand of Darkness, The Lathe of Heaven, Always Coming Home, and Powers.
