End of Conception

Conception, a gaming convention held at the UK town of New Milton since 2000, has announced that they have ended their run. The management of Hoburne Naish, the holiday resort where the convention has been held, has undergone some changes and their new policies offered challenges which left Conception with the option of moving to a new location or cancelling.

Game Writers Eligible for SFWA

SFWA has announced that game writers will be eligible for membership as of August 1, 2016. Games in any medium may be used for qualification so long as the game has a narrative element, is in English, and in the science fiction, fantasy, horror or related genres.

Diana Jones Nominees

The Diana Jones committee has announced the shortlist for its 2016 award for Excellence in Gaming, to be presented at the Cadillac Ranch in Indianapolis on August 3, 2016. The Diana Jones Award has been presented annually since 2001. It takes its name from a destroyed copy of the Indiana Jones Role Playing Game.

Wu on The Internet Ruined My Life

SyFy’s The Internet Ruined My Life will feature a look at Brianna and Frank Wu’s experiences with Gamergate, including interviews with the couple and a dramatic recreation of her experiences. Wu, who founded Giant SpaceKat, has received more than 200 death threats since 2014.

Obituary: Christopher Rush

Artist Christopher Rush (b.1965) died on February 10. Much of Rush’s work was created for the gaming industry and his art adorned many early Magic: The Gathering card. Rush also helped market early versions of the game. Rush was one of the few non-Japanese artist to work on Pokémon cards.

Obituary: Wayne England

Artist Wayne England died on February 9. Much of England’s work was created for the gaming industry and his art adorned works for Warhammer, Dungeons & Dragons, and Magic: The Gathering.

Kunkel Awards Announced

The Society of Professional Journalists have announced the creation of the Kunkel Award, named in honor of Bill Kunkel. The goal of the award is the encourage ethical and balanced news reporting of a fast-growing industry with millions of customers and will be presented in five categories: Excellence in News Reporting, Excellence in Feature Writing, Excellence in Feature Video/Streaming, Excellence in Photography/ Illustration/ Infographic, and Excellence in News Video/Streaming. Kunkel’s artwork consisted of satirical cartoons and he also co-founded the first magazine devoted to video and computer games, Electronic Games. Kunkel worked as a game designer, a comic book writer, and professional cartoonist. Nominations are open through February 14, 2016.

Lowder to Chaosium

James Lowder has announced that he has been retained as a Consulting Editor for the fiction line for the reconstituted company. Lowder will begin by figuring out the current state of Chaosium publishing contracts, rights, and obligations and will then help build the company’s new fiction line.
