Williamson Wins Baen Military SF Award

Michael Z. Williamson’s story “Soft Casualty” won the readers poll of the stories published in The Year’s Best Military SF & Space Opera, edited by David Afsharirad. Williamson received a plaque and $500 during the Baen Traveling Road Show at Dragoncon.

Best Military SF Contest

Baen Books has announced a contest to determine the Best Military Science Fiction, although it appears they are asking readers to vote for the Best Military Science Fiction as published in the anthology Year’s Best Military Science Fiction and Space Opera Award, edited by David Afsharirad. Voting is open until August 31, 2015 with the winner being announced at DragonCon, held the weekend of September 4-7. The winner will receive a plaque and a $500 prize.

Baen Adds Kobo

Baen Books has announced that beginning on March 24, its e-0books will be available on the Kobo platform for download. Baen has been a leader in DRM free e-books for fifteen years.

Haywood-Cory Promoted

Laura Haywood-Cory has been promoted to Associate Editor at Baen Books. Haywood-Cory has previously served as an editorial assistant at Baen and has long been active in science fiction fandom and con-running.

Jim Baen Memorial Writing Contest Winner

Patrick Lundrigan has won this year’s Jim Baen Memorial Writing Contest with his story “Space Hero.” The contest is sponsored by Baen Books and the National Space Society to promote and reward forward thinking science fiction authors who write exciting and innovative stories about the near future of manned space exploration. Lundigran’s story will be published on Baen’s website and he will receive a membership in the NSS, Baen Books, and NSS merchandise. The winner was announced at the International Space Development Conference in Rosemont, IL on May 30.

Laura Haywood-Cory In Hospital

Southern fan Laura Haywood-Cory suffered an heart attack on March 30. Haywood-Cory, who was one fo the founding members of Trino*coN, is having blockage cleared. In addition to her fannish activities, Haywood-Cory does publicity work for Baen Books.
