Nebula Nominations

Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) has announced the nominees for this year’s Nebula Awards, Norton Award, and Bradbury Award. All of the awards will be presented at the 50th annual Nebula Award Banquet in Chicago, IL on May 14, with Toast Master John Hodgman. All SFWA Active members may vote for the Nebulas from March 1 through March 31. This year’s SFWA Nebula Conference will take place at Chicago’s Palmer House from May 12-15.

To attend the SFWA Nebula Conference…

DucKon Remains on Hiatus

After cancelling the 2015 DucKon and establishing a transition team to take care of the convention’s debt and retool for future DucKons, the Duckon Transition Team has announced that they are not in a position to host a DucKon in 2016. The Chicago area convention held 23 events before they were forced to cancel the convention. At this time, their focus is on “clean[ing] the financial slate.” Once that is done, they will determine if it is feasible to host future conventions.

Hodgman Toastmasters the Nebulas

John Hodgman, longtime Resident Expert on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the voice of the Father and the Other Father in the film Coraline, will serve as toastmaster at the 50th Nebula Awards banquet, held during the SFWA Nebula Conference on May 14 in Chicago, IL. The conference will run from May 12-15 at the Palmer House and features four days of seminars, workshops, and career building and network opportunities.

SMOFCon 2016 in Chicago

Helen Montgomery will chair SMOFCon 2016 in Chicago on the weekend of December 2-4. A venue for the event has not yet been selected. This will be the 34th SMOFCon, a convention for conrunners, and the second time the event has been held in Chicago, the prior outing in 2003. In addition, bids have been announced for SMOFCons in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Chicago was unopposed for the 2016 bid.

Corflu Chiflu in Chicago

Nigel Rowe has announced that Corflu Chiflu, a convention for fanzine fans, will take place in Chicago from May 13-15 at the Club Quarters Hotel on Adams. Corflu Chiflu joins the Nebula Award Weekend taking place the same weekend two blocks away at the Palmer House, and Book Expo America/Bookcon taking place in Chicago at McCormick Place the same week. Corflu memberships are currently $75 and can be purchased using Paypal through the Corflu website.

Variety Comics Closes

Variety Comics, the longest continuously operating comic store in Chicago, has announced that it will close on October 31 after 41 years in business. Everything in the store will be on sale during its last weeks.

Nebula Awards

The Nebula Awards were presented on Saturday, June 6 at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago during the Nebula Weekend celebrating the 50th anniversary of SFWA. The award ceremony was hosted by Nick Offerman. The Solstice, Grand Master, and Service Awards had all been previously announced. Reportage on this and other items has been delayed as the editor of SF Site News was chairing this year’s Nebula Weekend.

SFWA Announces Nebula Toastmaster

SFWA has announced that Nick Offerman, who portrayed Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation will be the toastmaster at the 50th Nebula Award Ceremony, to be held at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago on June 6. The Nebula Award weekend is open to anyone and will also feature a free mass autographing on Friday evening from 8:00-9:30.

Solstice Winners

SFWA has announced that Joanna Russ and Stanley Schmidt will be this year’s recipients of the Solstice Awards at the 50th Nebula Award Weekend, to be held in Chicago from June 4-7. Russ is being honored as a fiction writer, mentor, teacher, editor, and critic. Schmidt is being recognized for his 34 years as editor of Analog.
