The Rebel Award, Phoenix Award, and the Rubble Award, all presented at ConGregate/DeepSouthCon 55 in High Point, North Carolina. The Rebel and Phoenix Awards are official awards, while the Rubble is an unofficial, but traditional award. The Rebel Award is presented for service to Southern fandom by a fan. the Phoenix is given for support by a pro of Southern fandom and/or professional work reflecting positively on the South, and the Rubble is given for the fan who’s done the most to Southern Fandom.

ConCave to Host DeepSouthCon

ConCave and Oasis both presented bids to host the 2018 DeepSouthCon during the DeepSouthCon business meeting at JordanCon this past weekend. Because Oasis was occurring simultaneously, the Oasis representative Skyped in for the presentation. ConCave won the right to host DeepSouthCon with a vote of 15-13.

The business meeting also discussed a change to the bylaws to make selection of a replacement con easier if a seated DSC has to cancel. Jennifer Liang also proposed the creation of a fan fund to bring fans to DeepSouthCon.

The Rebel and Phoenix Awards are official awards, while the Rubble is an unofficial, but traditional award. The Rebel Award is presented for service to Southern fandom by a fan. the Phoenix is given for support by a pro of Southern fandom and/or professional work reflecting positively on the South, and the Rubble is given for the fan who’s done the most to Southern Fandom. The new Fleur de Fan Award is presented by Contraflow.

DeepSouthCon 55 to North Carolina

DeepSouthCon 55, to be held in 2017, was awarded to High Point, North Carolina in a competitive race with Bowling Green, Kentucky. The event will be held in conjunction with High Point’s Congregate convention. Congregate is generally held in July.

DeepSouthCon Awarded to JordanCon

Following the cancellation of next year’s DeepSouthCon, JordanCon proposed a bid to host the long-running traveling convention. Originally scheduled to be a stand-alone convention in Atlanta in May, DeepSouthCon will not take place as part of JordanCon, also in Atlanta, the weekend of April 22-24. The Guests of Honor will be Catherine Asaro and John Picacio.

JordonCon Bids DSC

Following the cancellation of DeepSouthCon 54, JordanCon has announced that it will bid to host the annual traveling regional convention in conjunction with JordanCon 8, scheduled to be held April 22-24, 2016. JordanCon previously hosted DeepSouthCon in 2013. This year’s DeepSouthCon will take place the weekend of October 24-6 in conjunction with Contraflow V.

DeepSouthCon 16 Cancelled

M. Lee Rogers has announced that ABC DeepSouthCon, the 2016 version of the event scheduled to be held in Roswell, GA, has been cancelled because a review of their finances has led them to believe that the event was not longer fiscally feasible. DeepSouthCon is a traveling con which is often connected to an existing con, although in 2016 it was going to be run as its own identity. It has been pointed out that ABC DeepSouthCon was scheduled to run the same weekend as Atlanta’s OutlantaCon. There are efforts being made to hold DeepSouthCon in conjunction with a different convention in 2016.

DeepSouthCon 2016 Moves

DeepSouthCon has announced that it will be held the weekend of May 13-15, 2016 at the Doubletree Hotel in Roswell, GA, previously the site of the 2013 DeepSouthCon. Originally, the convention was scheduled to be held in Atlanta. DeepSouthCon will announce the slate of guests once they have all been finalized.
