Conway Retires from Eaton

Melissa Conway, who has been the director of the Eaton Collection at the University of California Riverside since 2001, announced her retirement at the beginning of the year. During her tenure, she revived the Eaton Science Fiction Conference, established the Eaton Lifetime Achievement Award in Science Fiction, and increased their holdings by 40%, including the acquisition of Bruce Pelz’s fanzine collection and Jay Kay Klein’s photography collection.

Librarian Wanted: UC Riverside

The University of California-Riverside is looking for an Associate Librarian or Librarian to fill the new position of Jay Kay and Doris Klein Science Fiction Librarian in Special Collections & University Archives, which was recently endowed by a grant from the estate of Jay Kay Klein. The position will be responsible for all aspects of the development, stewardship, and promotion of the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy. The application period runs through January 26, 2015, but applicants are advised to submit their materials by January 19.

Eaton Collection Gets Donation

Only weeks after concerns were raised that the Eaton Collection at University of California-Riverside was undergoing changes which would decrease their holdings and limit the use of the collection, Special Collections Director Melissa Conway announced that science fiction photographer Jay Kay Klein bequeathed $3.5 million to the collection. Eaton had previously acquired Klein’s photography archives, which span seven decades from the 1940s to the 2010s.

Hodgson Papers to Eaton

Jane and Howard Frank have announced that they are donating their collection of papers by William Hope Hodgson to the Eaton Collection at University of Riverside. The collection once belonged to Sam Moskowitz and includes letters, photographs, and unpublished stories. An events supporting the donation will take place on April 16 and will include talks on Hodgson’s life and career.
