Ned Brooks Fanzine Exhibit

The University of Georgia’s Russell Special Collections Library in Athens has announced an exhibit on the fanzine collection of Ned Brooks, “To Infinity and Beyond.” In addition to the physical exhibit, the museum is also producing an on-line virtual exhibit which can be viewed from any computer.

Ned Brooks Memorial

A memorial gathering for fan Ned Brooks, who died on August 31, will be held at the Athens Pizza House in Decatur, GA on Sunday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m. Friends and fans who would like to make a donation in Ned’s name should consider the charities Amnesty International and the ACLU.

Southern Fandom Awards

The Rebel Award, Phoenix Award, the Rubble Award, and a new Fleur de Fan Award were all presented at DeepSouthCon 53/ContraFlow V in New Orleans, LA. The Rebel and Phoenix Awards are official awards, while the Rubble is an unofficial, but traditional award. The Rebel Award is presented for service to Southern fandom by a fan. the Phoenix is given for support by a pro of Southern fandom and/or professional work reflecting positively on the South, and the Rubble is given for the fan who’s done the most to Southern Fandom. The new Fleur de Fan Award is presented by Contraflow.

  • Rebel Award: Frank Sciotta, for being an instrumental volunteer at many conventions and Michael Scott, founder of CoastCon
  • Phoenix Award: Diana Rowland and Robert Asprin
  • Rubble Award: The Force of Gravity for taking away Ned Brooks so recently

  • Fan Fleur de Fan Award: Area 51 for amazing room parties

Obituary: Ned Brooks

Fan Ned Brooks (b.Cuyler W. Brooks, Jr., 1938) died on August 31 following a fall from his roof, where he was doing repairs. Brooks was long active in N3F, and in 1972 won the Kaymar Award. He was the recipient of the Rebel Award in 1976 and the Rubble Award in 1992. Brooks published such fanzines as The New Newport News News, It Goes on the Shelf, and It Comes in the Mail. He was the Fan Guest of Honor at Rivercon IV in 1978 and at DeepSouthCon 39 in 2001.
