SFPA Names Kopaska-Merkel Grand Master

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association (SFPA) has named David C. Kopaska-Merkel as a Grand Master for 2017. Kopaska-Merkel becomes the seventh recipient of this title, which is not given out annually. Kopaska-Merkel served a the editor of Star*Line from 1992-2002 and then served as the association’s President. He founded the speculative poetry ‘zine Dreams and Nightmares and has won the Rhysling Long Poem Award.

SFPA Renames Itself

The Science Fiction Poetry Association has voted to rename itself the Science Fiction and Fantasy Poetry Association, although it will retain the SFPA initials. 63.4% of the voting members chose to change the name with 75% voting to keep the acronym. 58.3% voted for the winning name for the organization.

Rhysling Nominees

The Rhysling nominations have been been announced the the Science Fiction Poetry Association. The Rhyslings are presented to recognize excellence in speculative verse. This year saw a record breaking number of nominees in the two categories, Long Poem (more than 50 lines or 500 words) and Short Poem (fewer than 50 lines or 500 words). The list has 93 Short Poems and 60 long poems on it and can be found at the link below.

SFPA Nominations Controversy

The Science Fiction Poetry Association is in the middle of a controversy after announcing that it was declining the nomination of the poem “I Will Be Your Grave,” by Tlotlo Tsamaase in the Long Form category as not containing enough speculative material. The poem was nominated by A.J. Odasso, one of the editors of Strange Horizons and appeared on the SFPA’s page as a nomination prior to its rejection. Accusations have been made at SFPA, which has admitted that they failed to follow their own policy prior to removing the poem.

Poetry Grand Masters Named

The Science Fiction Poetry Association has named two new Poetry Grand Masters, the first since 2010. Marge Ballif Simon and Steve Sneyd have received the honor for their years of publishing poetry in a variety of places. Simon’s work has previously received the Bram Stoker Award, the Rhysling Award, the Dwarf Stars Award, and the Strange Horizons Readers Award. In addition to publishing his own Poetry, Sneyd presents the annual DataDump Award and has published numerous other poets.
