Apollo 11 Goes on Tour

The Smithsonian Institute is sending the Apollo 11 on a tour of four museums in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the first lunar landing. The command module Columbia, along with other artifacts from the Apollo 11 mission, will visit Space Center Houston (October 14, 2017-March 18, 2018), the Saint Louis Science center (April 14-September 3, 2018), the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh (September 29, 2018-February 18, 2019) and Seattle’s Museum of Flight (March 16-September 2, 2019).

Stern and Mouly Honored

Fran├žoise Mouly and Alan Stern will be among those honored with the American Ingenuity Award by the Smithsonian on November 12. The American Ingenuity Awards are selected by a poll of Smithsonian directors to find innovators making a difference in their fields. Mouly is being honored for her work on comics such as Raw, while Stern is being recognized as the leader of the New Horizons mission to Pluto.

Armstrong Suit Preservation

The Smithsonian Institute has announced that it has successfully raised $550,000 via Kickstarter in order to preserve the spacesuit worn by Neil Armstrong during the first moonwalk. The Smithsonian is planning another Kickstarter to raise $700,000 to preserve the suit worn by Alan B. Shepard, Jr. on the first American manned launch.
