Gallo Receives Gangel

Tor Creative Director Irene Gallo has received the Richard Gangel Art Director Award from the Society of Illustrators. The Richard Gangel Award was established in 2005 to honor art directors currently working in the field. The Society will be honoring Gallo at the Book and Editorial Opening Reception on Friday, February 5th.

Powers Inducted into Hall of Fame

Artist Richard Powers has been inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. Powers was a major science fiction artist with work appearing on book covers throughout the 1950s and 1960s. The Society of Illustrators has been inducted artists into the Hall of Fame since 1958 and powers joins other SF artists Virgil Finlay, Will Eisner, and Kinuko Craft in the hall.

Finlay Inducted Into Society of Illustrators

Virgil Finlay has been inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. Finlay was one of the per-eminent illustrators in the science fiction field, his work appearing in Weird Tales, Startling Stories, Thrilling Wonder, Captain Future, Strange Stories, and other magazines. In 1953, Finlay won the first Hugo Award for Interior Illustrator and he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2012. Last year, in honor of the centennial of his birth, The Collectors’ Book of Virgil Finlay was published by American Fantasy Press.

Dillons at Society of Illustrators

The Society of Illustrators in New York will be hosting an exhibit of the worlds of Leo and Diane Dillon from October 21 through December 20. The Dillons worked as a team, winning the Hugo Award, two Caldecott Medals, two Coretta Scott King Awards, and the Society of Illustrators Gold Medal. The Society is located at 128 East 63rd Street.

Spectrum Exhibit in New York

The Society of Illustrators at 128 East 63rd Street will host an exhibit in conjunction with the Spectrum art contest from September 1 through October 17. Spectrum was founded in 1993 and presents excellence in science fiction and fantasy art through a series of Hugo-nominated collections each year. A ticketed Opening reception will take place on September 11. The following day, the Society will host Art Out Loud 6 from 1pm to 5 pm featuring artists James Gurney, Sam Weber, Charles Vess, Donato Giancola, and Gregory Manchess. A portion of the proceeds from the Spectrum Exhibition will be donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk in Dave Stevens’s memory.
