Diverse Writers and Diverse Worlds Grant

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced the winner of the Diverse Writers Grant and Diverse Worlds Grant. Both grants of $500 were awarded to Erin Roberts. The Diverse Writers Grant offers support to new and emerging writers from underrepresented and underprivileged groups whose marginalized identities may present additional obstacles in the writing/publishing process. The Diverse Worlds Grant is presented for work that best presents a diverse world, regardless of the writer’s background.

Mary Anne Mohanraj has announced that the Speculative Literature Foundation has partnered with Kickstarter to use their new Drip Funding system to offer regular subscriptions. The new model allows the SLF to plan for a steady stream of sponsor support in their planning.

Older Writers Grants Announced

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced that Debra Wilburn and Sharon Joss are the winners of this year’s Older Writers Grant. Wilburn’s submitted story was based on her experience at the ER after several bites from a horse fly. Joss published her first short story in 2013 shortly after turning 59. The $500 prize is given to help writers who are at least 50 years old and beginning to work at a professional level. The award has been given annually since 2004.

Older Writers Grants

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced that Deborah (DK) McCutchen and Michael Fontana are the winners of this year’s Older Writers Grant. McCutchen’s firsh novel, Jellyfish, has been excerpted in Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet. Fontana published his first novel shortly after turning 48. The $750 prize is given to help writers who are at least 50 years old and beginning to work at a professional level. The award has been given annually since 2004.

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced that it will be contributing funds to the Latino/a Rising anthology, an anthology which will support and promote emerging Latino/a authors. The anthology series will be edited by Matthew Goodwin.

Gulliver Grant Available

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announces the application period for our Gulliver Travel Research Grant is open until September 30. The winner for the grant is expected to be announced by November 15, 2014. The Travel Grant is an award of $800 to be used to cover airfare, lodging, and/or other travel expenses incurred during research for a work of fiction.

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced two new grants, the Diverse Writers Grant and the Diverse Worlds Grant. The Diverse Writers Grant is intended to support new and emerging writers from underrepresented and underprivileged groups, including writers of color, women, queer writers, disabled writers, working-class writers, and those whose marginalized identities may present additional obstacles in the writing and/or publishing process. The Diverse Worlds Grant is intended for work that best presents a diverse world, regardless of the writer’s background. Applications for the grants, each of which is for $500, are being accepted through September 15.

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced the winner of the Gulliver Travel Grant. Daniel Jose Older has received the $800 grant to travel to Cuba to research prisons where Cuban political prisoners were held.
