Obituary: Stu Shiffman

Fan artist Stu Shiffman (b.1954) died on November 26. Shiffman won a Best Fan Artist Hugo in 1990. From 1999 until 2014, he served as a judge for the Sidewise Awards for Alternate History. Shiffman suffered a stroke two years ago and had been recovering before a fall earlier this year. Earlier this year, he married long-time companion Andi Schechter.

Shiffman Steps Down

Longtime Sidewise judge Stu Shiffman has stepped down from the jury. Shiffman suffered a stroke in 2012, which curtailed his activity on the jury, but a fall two weeks ago has made him and wife Andi Shechter realize it was time to resign his position as a judge for the annual alternate history awards.

Rotsler Winner

Stu Shiffman has been named the winner of this year’s Rotsler Award. Established in 1998, the Rotsler, named for fan artist William Rotsler, includes an honorarium of $300 and is presented for long-time artistic achievement in amateur publications of the science fiction community. The Rotsler Award is sponsored by the Southern California Institute for Fan Interests.
