Mexicanx Initiative Update

John Picacio has announced several recipients of Worldcon 76 Memberships of his Mexicanx Initiative, sponsored by numerous science fiction artists, authors, and fans. So far, memberships have been provided to Mario Acevedo, Marcela Davison Avilés, David Bowles, Libia Brenda Castro, J.C. Cervantes, Sara Felix, Bernardo “Bef” Fernández, Héctor Gonzalez, F.G. Haghenbeck, Angela Lujan, Gabriela Damian Miravete, Gerardo Horacio Porcayo, Smok, Tanya Leal Soto, Robbie Trevino, Gary Villarreal, and Gabriela Frias Villegas. Picacio has said that additional recipients will be announced next week.

DUFF Race Live

Paul Weimer and Clare McDonald-Sims, the DUFF administrators, have announced that this year’s Down Under Fan Fund (DUFF) race is now open for voting. The winner (may) travel to Worldcon 76 in San Jose, CA from August 19-20. For the third year in a row, The race only has one nominee, however voting remains important as a means of raising the necessary funds to keep DUFF a continuing concern. Votes will be accepted until March 31, 2017.

Four Sponsored Memberships for Worldcon 76

Worldcon 76 Artist Guest of Honor John Picacio and John Scalzi have teamed up to offer a total of four attending memberships to Worldcon 76 in San Jose. Each will sponsor two memberships for Mexicanx members, with two going to professional sf/f artists and two going to fans. Individuals interested in applying for the sponsorships should leave an answer to the question “Why do you want to attend this Worldcon?” on Picacio’s facebook page or send it to him via e-mail before this weekend.

Worldcon 76 Issues Call for Papers

Worldcon 76, to be held in San Jose from August 16-20, 2018, has issued a call for papers for its Academic track. The Academic Track Committee welcomes proposals for scholarly presentations, especially those that study content tied to our “Make the Future” convention theme. The submission deadline is February 5.

Del Arroz Banned from Worldcon 76

Worldcon 76 has announced that they will be reducing author Jonathan Del Arroz’s membership to a Supporting membership and not allowing him to attend this year’s convention. The reduction permits Del Arroz to vote in site selection and the Hugo Award process. The Worldcon has stated that they are responding to Del Arroz’s own comments which they believe indicates that he intended to break the announced code of conduct.

Worldcon 76 Funding for Chinese Fans

Storycon has set up the Shimmer Program to help fund the visit of Chinese fans to attend Worldcon 76 in San Jose. A Similar fund was successful for Worldcon 75 in Helsinki. Two active Chinese fans will be granted RMB10,000 to attend the convention.

TAFF Race Underway

Johan Anglemark of Sweden, Fia Karlsson of Sweden, and Helena McCallum of the UK have declared they are running for TAFF, to travel to San Jose for Worldcon 76 in 2018. The voting deadline is April 3.

DUFF Call for Nominees

The Down Under Fan Fund (DUFF) is looking for candidates for this year’s race to travel from Australia/New Zealand to the United States to attend Worldcon 76 in San Jose from August 16-20, 2018. Candidates should contact either Paul Weimer or Clare McDonald-Sims and have two North American nominators and three Australia/New Zealand nominators. Each candidate should also have a 100 word statement and be able to put up a $25 bond. The deadline for declaring candidacies is January 31. Picacio and Hayes to GOH at Worldcon 76

Worldcon 76, scheduled to be held in 2018 in San Jose, California, has announced the additions of artist John Picacio musician Frank Hayes to their list of Guests of Honor. Picacio and Hayes join previously announced guests Spider Robinson, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and Pierre & Sandy Pettinger. Worldcon 76 is also honoring tow “GOHsts of Honor,” Edgar Pangborn and Bob Wilkins. Worldcon 76 will take place in San Jose, California from August 16-20, 2018.

Worldcon for 2018 Selected

San Jose, CA has won the right to host the 2018 Worldcon, beating a bid for New Orleans, LA by 675-594 with 24 write-ins. The convention, which will be known as Worldcon 76, will take place the weekend of August 16-20. The guests of honor are Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Pierre & Sany Pettinger, and Spider Robinson. In addition, Rob Wilkins and Edgar Pangborn will be Ghosts of Honor.
